Sturdy books that contain encouraging stories are as necessary to children as are warm clothes and safe shelter. But with the high cost of cloth books, which typically hold up better and longer under repeated use, and with limited budgets, paperbacks are often the affordable choice. Kids in crisis-the very children who need these stories the most-are the least likely to be able to take good care of library books. If a child is living in a homeless shelter, living in a house full of other relatives because of a natural disaster, or living in a hotel room or out of a car, that child needs a small sturdy book that can be easily packed and carried and that can hold up under unusual reading situations. A large hardback book is too big to fit in a backpack filled with practically all of the possessions the child might own.
